a day without immigrants. a look at the demonstrations happening nationwide and in our area that show the impact immigrants have on all of our lives. new developments in the bridgegate scandal this morning. a judge finds probable cause in the case. we'll tell you the first wawa store in pennsylvania that now sells beer. right now cold, gusty winds are making it feel very frigid outside right now. here's a live look at center city right now. first alert meteorologist erika martinez here this morning with our forecast. >> good morning.

a great start to the day in the sense we have a high pressure system developing. we have those winds. don't worry they're going to start to diminish today into tomorrow. we still see some clouds out there. everything will start to improve again as a high pressure system starts to develop. we're tracking a really nice stretch of weather for the next couple of days. otherwise satellite and radar image low cally here we're gettg some light returns. mt. pocono reporting some light flurries right now. the story is wind speeds and wind gusts right now. notice wind speeds for philadelphia 23 miles per hour along with coatesville, dover air force base at 21. allentown, 22. toms river, 26 mile-per-hour wind speeds. what does that mean? current temperatures are mainly in the 30s. we have trenton at 37 along with philadelphia. allentown at 34.

wilmington at 38 degrees. of course when you put those ingredients together, the winds and those temperatures, it feels like it is 22 degrees in allentown. 26 in trenton. 24 in philly. and pottstown also feeling like it is in the low 20s. it's not going to get better in the next couple of hours because we have to wait for those winds to die down just a bit. notice feels like temperatures will start to improve a little bit by later there afternoon into the evening hours. the next big story as far as thyi'm concerned is this weekend warmup in the 60s. this just in. a judge says a criminal complaint against new jersey governor chris christie over the bridgegate scandal can move forward. the complaint accuses the governor of failing to stop the subordinates from intentionally creating traffic jams. christie has denied knowledge of

the scheme until weeks or months later. the governor is to appear in municipal court next month on a criminal summons. to delaware county. a car carrier jackknifed around 6:00 this morning on route 322 near i-95. the crash tied up traffic for several hours, but it is now clear. speaking of that, let's check on the roads right now with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> you're at 76. >> right. we're watching the schuylkill expressway right now. first we'll watch this because this is brand new. that off ramp, we're seeing some construction. until about 1:00 this afternoon they'll be down to one lane. we're seeing some delays because of that. this is abnormal for this time. we're going to see a ten to

15-minute delay behind that. the accident has cleared, but now there's barrier place in place on 322 in both directions. we're losing a lane. you can see a little bit of a delay right here, but for the most part we're back to normal. that's running between 95 and route 452 . the pa turnpike looks good in both directions, but there's construction on the turnpike ramp to morehall road. this is headed northbound to the philadelphia area. no problems or delays reported on 76 or in the rest of new jersey right now. back to you. three children are among those being treated for injuries in this house fire in grays ferry this morning. > >> right now neighbors are stepping in to help the victims.

pamela osborne is live. >> reporter: this fire was devastating. you can see a lot of the damage to that one row home there. fire officials tell me a man was actually standing on the roof in need of rescue when they got here this morning. that was around 5:00. firefighters used a ladder to rescue that man. we're told he's in stable condition and was being treated for burns to his arm. in all a total of five people, including three children ages 10, 2, and 5 months old, were taken to the hospital, but listed in stable condition on the way. the children suffered smoke inhalation. i spoke with the neighborhood block captain. she says she's allowing one adult and a few children who were displaced as a result of that fire to hang out at her house until they sort things out. >> they're good. they're playing a game. keep them busy. you know, kids get hurt behind certain stuff, you know, losing a home and stuff like that. we just keep praying.

>> reporter: and as we take a live look back out here at the scene, you can see some people are doing some work to that house, boarding it right up now. you can also see where the fire did spread a bit to the home next door, but firefighters able to keep that fire from spreading. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. nbc 10 news. right now, immigrant workers and their families across our area are participating in a nationwide movement called a day without immigrants. >> it's led to the closure of businesses in parts of our region and also across the country. randy gyllenhaal is live for us in allentown with more. randy, what's been the impact? >> reporter: well, we're here on 7th street in allentown, which over the past decade or so has seen a number of hispanic businesses opening up shop, but today a number of them will be closing, including this one, a mexican restaurant. they have actually put up these fliers here talking about the day without immigrants, calling

out president donald trump. this will go on for the rest of the day. we talked to some of the customers who say they support this decision. >> they work hard. so they work hard. they get businesses and they help the economy because they're working people. >> reporter: and we're also expecting similar protests like this in cities all across the country, including philadelphia. later today here in allentown also in reading we're expecting a protest downtown, including picket signs to support immigrant rights. we're live in allentown. nbc 10 news. police are questioning five people taken into custody after a chase through philadelphia. the chase ended in front of the state police barracks on monument road and belmont avenue. it started on north alden street in cobbs creek where police

stopped a car. shots were fired from the car. it took off. no one was hurt. a man is in the hospital in critical, but stable condition this morning after he was shot by philadelphia police officers. they saw the man leave a known drug house. one man ran from the house and pointed a gun at them. authorities have accused a day care worker of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old in the classroom while other children were sleeping. michael barkley is behind bars. at first he lied about what happened, but then confessed to the crime. he has been working in day care centers in the area since 2005. philadelphia police hope new video will help them catch the man who robbed two senior citizens in east oak lane. the camera captured the suspect

on the morning of february 2nd. he was later seen going up to two women pushing them on the ground and taking their purses. if you recognize him, call police. ringling brothers and barnum & bailey circus pulls into philadelphia one last time. last month the greatest show on earth announced it will shut down in may because of a drop in attendance. a wawa store in delaware county is the first in our area to sell beer. the store in chadsford celebrated its grand reopening this morning. the renovated store is the first wawa in the region to have a restaurant style seating area. phillies single game tickets are now on sale as we take a live look at citizens bank park. you can buy tickets for all regular 81 season games. the home opener is april 7th, and you can watch the game right here on nbc 10. face to face, secretary of state rex tillerson meets with

as we continue to follow president trump's first 100 days, the president will hold a noon news conference at the white house to announce his new head of the labor department. >> it comes as the president is vowing leakers of classified information will be tracked down. it comes after the president asked michael flynn to resign this week following a series of reports that revealed flynn had spoken to a russian diplomat about sanctions before president trump took office. earlier this morning the president tweeted, quote, the spotlight has finally been put on the low life leakers. they will be caught. before that he tweeted, leaking has been a big problem in washington for years. failing "new york times" and others must apologize. edward lawrence has more from washington. >> reporter: at a joint news

conference with the israeli prime minister, president donald trump addressed the fallout about russian ties centering around michael flynn. >> i think it's very, very unfair what's happened to general flynn, the way he was treated, and the documents and papers that were illegally -- i stress that -- leaked. >> reporter: late wednesday night two house committee chairman asked the justice department to look into a series of leaks related to flynn's calls with the russian ambassador. congress wants to get to the truth. >> if there's evidence of collaboration between trump campaign officials and russian operatives, that would be very serious. that would be a game changer. >> reporter: the senate judiciary committee is requesting transcriptions of flynn's calls.

now president trump's pick withdrew his name from consideration. it would be tough to get through a nomination hearing and his opposition to raising the minimum wage. vice admiral robert harward was offered the job of national security adviser. >> u.s. defense secretary jim mattis said america is not ready to collaborate militarily with russia. he has closed the door on any efforts to join russia to fight isis and syria. the playoff would mark a change of course for the trump administration. during the presidential campaign, president trump repeatedly praised russian president vladimir putin saying he wanted a new era of cooperation with moscow. secretary tillerson met with

the russian foreign minister. it's the first high level face-to-face meeting with russian officials since the president took office. there's a deal aimed at ending fight between ukrainians and russian-backed forces. tillerson said the u.s. will consider working with russia when they can find areas of practical cooperation that benefit the american people. german chancellor angela merkel testified today before a parliamentary committee. the panel wants to know more about alleged e e ed eavesdropp germany by the nsa. edward snowden revealed details

and the camera kind of shaking a little bit, so the winds a little bit of an issue right now, but they will start to diminish tonight into tomorrow as an area of high pressure system moves in. you can actually see a little bit of lake-effect influence. some flurries making it into mt. pocono. so far that's confirmed. lancaster as well. it looks like chester county, delaware county, and new castle county may be seeing some light flurries, but no official observations yet. i'll keep you updated on twitter and facebook. otherwise neighborhoods right now in delaware we're seeing lots of 30s. again, temperatures above the freezing mark, but notice how fast these winds are. allendale currently at 37. milton at 36. the pa suburbs also seeing lots

of 30s, but hovering around the freezing mark. west bradford township currently at 32. saint davids at 35. collegeville at 34. we have warrentington at 35. the wind store right now behind a frontal boundary that's already passed and the influence of a low pressure system way to the northeast of us. the current winds ranging anywhere from 10 miles per hour to 23 miles per hour. when we put those two together, it feels colder than that right now. feels like 27 philadelphia. 8 in mt. pocono. 26 in vineland. mount holly, it feels like a chilly 27 degrees. we do have to talk about the current wind gusts because they're stronger right now. we're measuring wind speeds over 18 miles per hour for just about 20 seconds. notice a push here. wind gusts for philadelphia 32

miles per hour. somerville 29 for you. coatesville, 31. wilmington current wind gusts 28 miles per hour. so that's pretty much going to be the story for this afternoon, but diminishing later tonight into tomorrow. however the great story is we have that high pressure system developing. look at all the sunshine. we have temperatures tomorrow in the 30s and 40s. 60s by saturday. 60s and more sunshine in the forecast on sunday. overnight lows for tonight we're going to keep it chilly. a couple of teens out there, but mainly in the low to mid 20s. allentown, you're expected overnight low 21 degrees. tomorrow temperatures mainly in the 40s. so at least we are warming up nicely. lots of sunshine. bethlehem, your expected high temperature 39 degrees. west chester, 43. haddenfield, 45.

so with no big winner last night, the jackpot for saturday's powerball drawing will be at least $349 million. that projection would make it the 19th largest jackpot in u.s. history. even though no one won the powerball jackpot last night, one ticket sold in new jersey was worth a million dollars. we're expected to find out where that ticket was sold later today. imagine saving up thousands of dollars for a vacation and then having your spouse give it away. >> this happened to a man in california, but in his wife's defense it was an accident. she gathered up a bunch of her husband's shirts and took them to goodwill.

current wind gusts right now. notice the direction. northwesterly winds, so colder air into place of course. coatesville, your current wind gust is at 31 miles per hour. philadelphia, 32. toms river, 37. millville along with dover air force base 30 miles per hour. why is this? there is a massive area high pressure system developing to the west of us. we do have this low just offshore. we have the influence of all of this air sliding into place. we have these blue arrows telling us where all this air is coming from. we're getting light returns here telling us we also have some light snow. while we don't have official observations here, it certainly looks like we will see a couple of light flurries moving through. we have a warmup in the works behind that high pressure system. notice 60s on saturday. lots of sunshine. i bump this up to 64 on saturday

students that are university students. mr. president, our businesses and contributions, without them will paralyze this country. >> mexicans do jobs that americans will not do for nothing, and mexicans do it for very little money just so that they can survive. >> they work hard. they work hard and get businesses. they help the economy because they're working people. >> reporter: so both here in allentown, in philadelphia, cities across the country are seeing similar closures. people not showing up to work. later today in downtown allentown, there'll be a rally to support immigrants, especially in light of some deportations and arrests that have happened over the past few weeks. nbc 10 news. meantime happening today, philadelphia city hall will be the site of another rally. that's at noon today as part of the day without immigrants

demonstration. it is expected to last until 3:00 this afternoon. in washington, d.c., demonstrators gathered for a workers' rights rally. this event is aimed at holding president trump accountable to the working class. senators bernie sanders and elizabeth warren were due to headline that rally. esteban santiago is scheduled to go before a federal judge in miami this afternoon. he's accused of killing five people and wounding six others in a ft. lauderdale airport last month. he has pleaded not guilty. at least a dozen drivers were left stranded in north washington thanks to this mudslide. this happened on a busy highway near seattle. drivers are being rerouted around this mess while crews work to reopen the interstate. now to a potential breakthrough in the fight against autism. >> a new study shows it is possible to predict the risk of autism in some children much

earlier. here's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: this morning doctors have found a way to take some of the mystery out of autism. >> i think it gives a lot of hope. >> reporter: a new study just published finds it may be possible to predict autism within the first year of the child's life. >> if we're able to detect it based on early brain developments, then we can begin interventions earlier to improve the long-term outcome of these children. >> reporter: researchers like this doctor in washington university in st. louis performed mri brain scans on babies with siblings that had autism. with that information, they were able to predict 80% of babies with autism. >> a relatively small set of

children were studied. it needs to be repeated with a much larger set of children. >> what's the most challenging thing about being a parent of a child with autism? >> looking around at other families and seeing what they can do that you can't do. it was heartbreaking for sure. >> reporter: that meant his brothers were at a higher risk for the disorder. >> we're watching every move they make. it was a tough go for the first couple years of their lives for sure. >> reporter: her youngest son was a part of the new study which found no signs of autism in his brain. she says the research could now be a life changer. >> i wish a study like this could have come out 15 years ago. just to think how much further we would have been with our own son. >> now we know vitamin d is good for bone and muscle health, but

new research shows it could also keep you from getting sick. regular vitamin d supplements helped cut their risk of res respitory illness in half. the ceremony. the 71-year-old finally received her diploma from benjamin franklin high school. she told us she felt like a kid again and she thanked the teachers and the students who encouraged her along the way. >> when i first started, it was like, i can't do this. i can't do this, but my english teacher and my history teacher kept saying you can do it, and i did. >> she says she plans on doing

new this morning, education secretary betsy devos is talking about the importance of community college. she spoke to the 2017 community college national legislative summit in washington, d.c. she praised community colleges as economic engines in helping people find jobs. she said she experienced the opposition that she did because parents are passionate about education and they want what's best for students. we have an update now on a delaware county classroom that has been skyping with syrian refugees. katy zachry shows us students in h hagerford are getting a second chance to see their friends artwork in person. >> reporter: it's a meeting months in the making. >> hi, everybody. >> reporter: the first time these third and fourth graders

have met martinez was over skype. she was in greece in a small room surrounded by young syrian refugees. now she's in their class. >> do you like the kids there? >> they're amazing. they're amazing. they've gone through a lot, but they're really, really happy and they -- they're very loving. >> reporter: she is a humanitarian living just outside a large refugee camp in greece. she and some young refugees began skyping with the class last year after she teamed up with one of the kids' moms who runs a nonprofit. and for her first visit, she's brought art created by syrian kids in hopes of raising money for their families. >> we give the children 20 euros directly to them. >> reporter: that's about $22. the young artists give the money to their mothers who buy food for their families. >> i really like this one and this one. they're both amazing. >> reporter: some of the

students' families have contributed to the cause, even buying some of the art. most of the paintings are inspired by the treacherous journey made out of syria. >> it makes me feel so good because this is going to help them survive long enough to get help. >> i want to give the children a way to escape from living in the camp, to give them a better and safer environment. >> reporter: some of the artwork has even been made into postcards. she plans to return to the u.s. next month bringing more artwork with her and she plans to go to other u.s. cities as well. katy zachry, nbc 10 news. many older adults want to spend their remaining years living in their own homes. tonight habitat for humanity is offering a free clinic to help you or someone you love age safely in place. we have a guest here this morning. most people know habitat for humanity as building homes for

low-income people in need. tell us more about this safe at home program. >> safe at home is part of our habitat home repair program called a brush for kinds. it's for low-income folks in bucks county. we looked at people we were serving through a brush with kindness and most of them were older people, mostly older women living alone or disabled adults. instead of just doing exterior repairs, we expanded it to do interior repairs to help everyone stay safe at home. >> you just realized these people could use some help and some of these things are pretty easy. right? >> exactly. it's fairly easy to change a faucet handle to a lever or just to have more light in your home can be incredibly helpful in keeping you from falling or having an accident.

>> so the people who have attend today, will they be loved ones of seniors or seniors themselves and what will you teach them? >> i think we're going to have a mixed crowd. we have older adults who are interested in making their own home safe. i suspect we'll have some adult children who are trying to help out their parents and we have interior designers and home repair people themselves who want to be able to help their clients. >> besides the faucets, what are some of the easiest and cost effective ways that you can change a home to be better suited for a senior to age safely in place? >> i think the easiest way to think about it is to kind of imagine taking a walk through your house. you're walking up to your door and what is it that's complicated about getting into your door. if you're using a walker or carrying a bunch of groceries, it could be the steps. it could be fumbling to get the key into the lock and not having a place to set your bags. that's are simple modifications.

once you get inside, are the hallways cluttered? are there railings on stairways on both sides of the stairway so you can be safe going up and down? and then when you get into the kitchen, the high task area where you do your chopping and prepping, is it well lit? is there a place you can sit to do that chopping because as we get older it's more difficult to bend. in the bathroom, the most dangerous room in the house -- >> right. >> the most common modification that people make is they put in grab bars in the tub and at the toilet, have nonskid interifloo. a find a hand held shower on a sliding bar is really helpful and it's also really good for washing the dog. >> perfect. thank you so much for being with us today. we appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> safe at home repair clinic is happening this evening at 7:00

coatesville currently at 36 degrees. the normal high in philadelphia is 44 degrees. our forecasted high here is 40. sunset tonight for 5:32 p.m. neighborhoods right now for the delaware valley, south jersey mainly in the upper 30s right now. we are trending warmer through the weekend, so keep that in mind. piny hollow at 35. turne turnersville currently at 36 degrees. robinsville currently at 35 degrees. lehigh valley seeing lots of low 30s. leonardsville at 31. nazareth, 31. whitehall, 35. bethlehem currently at 34 degrees. current gusts right now ranging between 20 miles per hour to 37 miles per hour coming out of northwest. these wind gusts will start to

diminish later overnight into tomorrow, but of course it all depends on a high pressure system as it develops, so i do want to show you a wider perspective. notice right here we're not seeing any clouds. you kind of see a ridge there and everything slides on down towards the east coast. this is telling us we have a massive high pressure system starting to develop. this is what is going to head in our direction and be the weather maker starting tomorrow through next tuesday possibly wednesday and thursday, but right now we do have some influence here. lake-effect influence. light flurries were being reported for mt. pocono. also for lancaster and chester county and delaware county. keep that in mind. although for the most part conditions are dry, so it is all about this upcoming weekend. high pressure system keeps everything high and dry. temperatures climb into the 60s. friday we're seeing upper 30s to low to mid 40s. philadelphia, 45 degrees is your expected high temperature.
